All past expeditions

1. Pin a country the Equator crosses

Land crossings only, islands included.

The gem: São Tomé & Príncipe. The line runs across Ilhéu das Rolas, a speck of an island just off São Tomé’s southern tip.

2. Pin a landlocked country in Africa

Sixteen countries qualify.

The gem: Lesotho. Wholly surrounded by South Africa, and the only country whose entire territory lies above 1,000 m.

3. Pin a country whose flag is only red and white

Two colours only. Qatar’s maroon counts as red; Malta’s grey-edged cross does not.

The gem: Latvia. Its carmine-white-carmine is among the oldest flag designs still in use, described in a chronicle from the 1200s.

4. Pin a country where Portuguese is an official language

Sovereign countries only.

The gem: Timor-Leste. Portuguese shares official status with Tetum, four centuries after the first Portuguese traders arrived.

5. Pin a country that borders exactly one other country

Land borders only, territories included. That rules out Morocco (Ceuta, Melilla), the UK (Gibraltar), and Canada and Denmark, which split Hans Island in 2022.

The gem: Brunei. Malaysia cuts it into two separate pieces, yet Malaysia is still its only neighbour.

Rarity tiers reflect how often players reach for each answer. Borders follow Natural Earth.
